Steiffmargarete

Margarete Steiff (24 July 1847 – 9 May 1909) was a German businesswoman, famously known as the founder of the Steiff Company, which is renowned for producing the first teddy bear. Margarete's life story is not only a testament to her entrepreneurial spirit but also her resilience in the face of adversity.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Margarete Steiff was born in Giengen, an industrial town in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. At the age of 18 months, she contracted polio, which left her with limited use of her right arm and complete paralysis of her legs. Despite her physical limitations, Margarete was determined to lead a productive life. She trained as a seamstress, excelling in needlework due to her perseverance and the support of her family.

Career[edit | edit source]

In 1877, Margarete Steiff established a felt clothing business, initially focusing on garments and articles such as aprons. Her entry into toy making was somewhat accidental. In 1880, she crafted a small elephant pin cushion, which became popular as a toy among children rather than its intended use. This success led Margarete to shift her focus towards toy production, marking the beginning of the Steiff Company's venture into the toy industry.

The Steiff Company gained international recognition in 1903 when an American buyer ordered 3,000 of their teddy bears, a product that had been introduced in 1902. This order was a significant milestone, establishing Steiff toys' popularity in the United States and leading to the teddy bear's enduring legacy.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Margarete Steiff's legacy is evident in the global success of the Steiff Company, which remains a leading name in high-quality stuffed toys. Her story is a source of inspiration, highlighting the impact of determination and innovation. The company's commitment to quality, exemplified by the "Button in Ear" trademark, continues to set Steiff products apart in the toy industry.

Margarete Steiff's contributions extend beyond her business achievements. She is remembered as a pioneer for people with disabilities, demonstrating that physical limitations do not define one's capabilities or potential for success.

Death and Honors[edit | edit source]

Margarete Steiff passed away on 9 May 1909 in Giengen. Her legacy is preserved through the Steiff Museum, which showcases the history of the Steiff Company and its products. Margarete has been posthumously honored in various ways, including commemorative stamps and the naming of streets after her in Germany.
