Maria Vorontsova (Russian: Мария Воронцова, born Mariya Vladimirovna Putina, Мария Владимировна Путина; 28 April 1985), also known as Maria Faassen, is a Russian pediatric endocrinologist and the eldest daughter of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Born in Leningrad, now known as Saint Petersburg, Vorontsova is the elder daughter of Vladimir Putin and Lyudmila Putina (née Shkrebneva). She spent her early years attending a German school in Dresden, East Germany, during her family's stay in the 1980s. Following the family's return to Leningrad in 1991, she continued her education at Peterschule, a German gymnasium in Saint Petersburg.

In the midst of violent gang wars in Saint Petersburg, she and her sister Katerina were sent to Germany for their safety under the guardianship of former Stasi Matthias Warnig. Vorontsova exhibited a talent for music, performing a violin piece at a diplomatic breakfast sponsored by the Russian consulate general of Hamburg in 1995. After her family relocated to Moscow, she attended the German School Moscow, a school associated with the German Embassy in Moscow for children of diplomats. Three years after graduating, she began her university studies alongside her sister Katerina.

Professional Life[edit | edit source]

Vorontsova pursued a career in medicine, studying biology at Saint Petersburg State University and graduating from Moscow State University in 2011. Under the supervision of Ivan Ivanovich Dedov, she undertook her PhD at the Endocrinology Research Centre in Moscow, which manages the charity project Alfa-Endo, catering to children with endocrine diseases.

Between 2013 and 2015, Vorontsova co-authored five studies, including "The status of blood antioxidant system in patients with active acromegaly". In 2015, she co-authored a book about idiopathic stunting in children. Vorontsova has also been reported as Putin's advisor in genetic engineering, particularly in the use of CRISPR for genetically-engineered babies.

Sanctions[edit | edit source]

Vorontsova faced sanctions from the United States on 6 April 2022 due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These sanctions were in response to her being an adult child of Vladimir Putin. The United States Department of the Treasury stated, "Vorontsova leads state-funded programs that have received billions of dollars from the Kremlin toward genetics research and are personally overseen by Putin." Following the US, the United Kingdom and the European Union imposed sanctions on Vorontsova on 8 April. Japan followed suit on 12 April, and New Zealand on 21 November.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Vorontsova first married Dutch businessman Jorrit Faassen in summer 2008 in Wassenaar in the Netherlands. They have a son, born in August 2012. The family resided in a penthouse in Voorschoten. However, by 2015, Vorontsova and Faassen had reportedly relocated to Moscow. Reports from 2022 indicate that they are no longer married. Vorontsova is now married to Yevgeny Nagorny, who works at the Russian oil and gas company Novatek. They have a son, born in April 2017.
