- Marion County is located in the U.S. state of Indiana. The county seat is Indianapolis, the state capital and most populous city in Indiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 977,203, making it the most populous county in Indiana. The county was officially established in 1822 and it was named after Francis Marion, a Brigadier General from South Carolina in the American Revolutionary War.
