Martha Stewart (born Martha Helen Kostyra; August 3, 1941) is an American television personality, businesswoman, writer, and television host. She is best known for her television show Martha Stewart Living and her magazine of the same name.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Stewart was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, the second of six children born to Polish-American parents. She grew up in Nutley, New Jersey, and began cooking and sewing at a young age. She attended Barnard College, where she earned a degree in history and architectural history.

Career[edit | edit source]

After college, Stewart worked as a stockbroker for several years before turning to catering and event planning. She started her own catering business in 1976, and published her first book, Entertaining in 1982. She went on to publish several more cookbooks and home decor books, including Martha Stewart's Quick Cook (1983), Martha Stewart's Christmas (1989), and The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook (2000).

Stewart's television show Martha Stewart Living premiered in 1993, and quickly became a popular and influential program, with Stewart showcasing her expertise in cooking, gardening, and home decor. The show ended its run in 2004, but Stewart continued to host other television programs, including The Martha Stewart Show and Martha Stewart's Cooking School.

In addition to her television work, Stewart has been involved in several business ventures, including a line of home decor products sold at Kmart, and a line of cookware and kitchen appliances sold at Macy's. She has also been involved in legal troubles, including a 2004 conviction for insider trading, which resulted in a five-month prison sentence and a period of house arrest.

Stewart was married to Andrew Stewart from 1961 to 1987, and they have one daughter together. She dated Microsoft executive Charles Simonyi from 1998 to 2008.

Awards and honors[edit | edit source]

Stewart has received several awards and honors throughout her career, including induction into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 1999, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008.
