Martinsburg is a city located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, United States. It serves as the county seat of Berkeley County and is the largest city in the Eastern Panhandle region. Martinsburg is known as the "Gateway to the Shenandoah Valley" due to its strategic location at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.

Martinsburg was founded in 1778 by General Adam Stephen, a veteran of the French and Indian War. It was named after Colonel Thomas Bryan Martin, a nephew of Lord Fairfax, who was instrumental in the city's early development. The city played a significant role during the American Civil War, serving as a key transportation and supply hub for the Confederate Army.
