Mattoon is a city located in Coles County, Illinois, United States. It is known as the "Gateway to the Prairie" due to its location at the western edge of the Illinois prairie. Mattoon was founded in 1855 by William B. Mattoon, a prominent landowner and politician. As of the 2020 census, Mattoon had a population of 18,555 people. The racial makeup of the city was 92.3% White, 4.5% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.9% Asian, and 1.9% from other races. Hispanic or Latino individuals accounted for 2.8% of the population.
