Matusalem & Co. is a renowned rum distillery with a rich history that dates back to 1872. Founded in Santiago de Cuba, the company was established by two brothers, Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, who were originally from Spain, and their partner Eusebio Alvarez. The name "Matusalem" is derived from the biblical patriarch Methuselah, symbolizing the aging process of their rum and the desire to create a product of exceptional quality and longevity.

History[edit | edit source]

The foundation of Matusalem & Co. was marked by the introduction of a unique distillation process, inspired by the techniques used in the production of cognac and other fine spirits. This process, combined with a meticulous aging method known as solera, allowed Matusalem & Co. to produce rum of unparalleled smoothness and complexity. The solera system involves blending younger rums with older ones, ensuring consistency and depth of flavor over time.

In the early 20th century, Matusalem & Co. became one of the most popular rum brands in Cuba, enjoying success both domestically and internationally. However, the Cuban Revolution in 1959 forced the company to relocate its operations. The turmoil led to a division within the family, and as a result, production was moved to the Dominican Republic, where it remains to this day.

Products[edit | edit source]

Matusalem & Co. offers a range of premium rums, each with its own distinct character and aging process. The portfolio includes:

  • Matusalem Gran Reserva 15: Often referred to as the "Cognac of Rums," this is a super-premium blend aged using the solera system. It is known for its smoothness and complex flavor profile.
  • Matusalem Clásico 10: A versatile rum that strikes a balance between sweetness and spice, making it ideal for cocktails.
  • Matusalem Platino: A clear rum that is triple distilled and filtered for purity, designed for mixing in cocktails where the clean taste of rum is essential.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

Matusalem & Co. has played a significant role in the cultural and social fabric of Cuba and the Caribbean. Its rums have been celebrated in literature, music, and cinema, often associated with the allure and mystique of the tropical lifestyle. The brand's history is intertwined with the story of Cuban exile and the preservation of Cuban cultural heritage abroad.

Current Operations[edit | edit source]

Today, Matusalem & Co. continues to operate from the Dominican Republic, maintaining its commitment to traditional production methods while embracing modern techniques to ensure the highest quality. The company remains family-owned, with a focus on sustainability and community involvement in its operations.
