Maura Tracy Healey (born February 8, 1971) is an American politician and attorney serving as the 73rd Governor of Massachusetts. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to her governorship, Healey served as the Attorney General of Massachusetts from 2015 to 2023.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Maura Healey was born in Bethesda, Maryland, and raised in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. She attended Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in government in 1992. During her time at Harvard, Healey was the co-captain of the women's basketball team. After graduating, she played professional basketball in Austria for two years.

Healey returned to the United States to pursue a legal career, enrolling at Northeastern University School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor in 1998.

Legal Career[edit | edit source]

After law school, Healey clerked for Judge A. David Mazzone of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. She then worked in private practice as an attorney at the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.

In 2007, Healey joined the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office, where she served in various capacities, including as Chief of the Civil Rights Division, Chief of the Public Protection and Advocacy Bureau, and Chief of the Business and Labor Bureau.

Attorney General of Massachusetts[edit | edit source]

In 2014, Maura Healey ran for the office of Attorney General of Massachusetts. She won the Democratic primary against former state senator Warren Tolman and went on to win the general election, becoming the first openly gay state attorney general in the United States.

As Attorney General, Healey focused on issues such as consumer protection, civil rights, and combating the opioid crisis. She was known for her advocacy on behalf of students against predatory for-profit colleges and her efforts to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for their role in the opioid epidemic.

Governor of Massachusetts[edit | edit source]

In 2022, Healey announced her candidacy for Governor of Massachusetts. She won the Democratic primary and subsequently the general election, taking office on January 5, 2023. As governor, Healey has prioritized issues such as climate change, education reform, and economic development.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Maura Healey is openly gay and has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights throughout her career. She resides in Boston, Massachusetts.
