Maurice Bessinger
Maurice Bessinger[edit | edit source]
Maurice Bessinger (July 14, 1930 – February 22, 2014) was an American businessman and restaurateur, best known for his chain of barbecue restaurants in South Carolina and his controversial political views. He was a prominent figure in the barbecue industry and a polarizing figure due to his outspoken support for the Confederacy and segregation.
Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Maurice Bessinger was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, into a family with a strong tradition of barbecue cooking. He grew up learning the art of barbecue from his father, who ran a small barbecue stand. After serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, Bessinger returned to South Carolina and took over the family business.
Barbecue Empire[edit | edit source]
In the 1950s, Bessinger expanded his family's barbecue business, opening several restaurants under the name "Piggie Park." His restaurants became famous for their mustard-based barbecue sauce, a regional specialty in South Carolina. Bessinger's barbecue sauce was eventually bottled and sold in grocery stores across the state.
Political Controversy[edit | edit source]
Maurice Bessinger was a staunch supporter of the Confederate flag and often displayed it prominently at his restaurants. In the 1960s, he was an outspoken opponent of the Civil Rights Movement and refused to integrate his restaurants, leading to several legal battles. Bessinger's political views and actions drew significant criticism and led to boycotts of his businesses.
In the early 2000s, Bessinger's decision to distribute pro-Confederate literature in his restaurants reignited controversy. Several major grocery chains stopped carrying his barbecue sauce, significantly impacting his business.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Despite the controversies, Maurice Bessinger left a lasting impact on the barbecue industry in South Carolina. His mustard-based barbecue sauce remains a popular condiment, and his restaurants continue to operate under the management of his family.
Bessinger's life and career are often cited in discussions about the intersection of business and politics, particularly in the context of the American South.
