Max Sieben Baucus (born December 11, 1941) is an American politician and diplomat who served as a United States Senator from Montana from 1978 to 2014 and as the United States Ambassador to China from 2014 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, Baucus was one of the longest-serving senators in U.S. history, known for his work on health care reform and trade policy.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Max Baucus was born in Helena, Montana, and raised on a ranch near Helena. He attended Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1964. Baucus then attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, earning a Juris Doctor in 1967.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

U.S. House of Representatives[edit | edit source]

Baucus began his political career in the United States House of Representatives, representing Montana's 1st congressional district from 1975 to 1978. During his time in the House, he focused on environmental issues and was a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources.

U.S. Senate[edit | edit source]

Baucus was elected to the United States Senate in 1978, succeeding Paul G. Hatfield. He served in the Senate for over 35 years, becoming one of the longest-serving senators in U.S. history. Baucus was known for his centrist positions and his ability to work across party lines.

Health Care Reform[edit | edit source]

One of Baucus's most significant contributions was his role in the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) in 2010.
