Mayinga N'Seka
Mayinga N'Seka is a nurse from the Democratic Republic of Congo who is known for her work during the first recorded outbreak of Ebola in 1976. She contracted the virus while caring for patients and later died from the disease. The strain of Ebola she contracted is now known as the Ebola virus strain Mayinga.
Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Mayinga N'Seka was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She chose a career in nursing and was working in the Yambuku Mission Hospital during the first recorded outbreak of Ebola in 1976.
Ebola Outbreak of 1976[edit | edit source]
In 1976, an outbreak of a then-unknown disease occurred in Yambuku, a small village in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The disease, which caused severe hemorrhagic fever, was later identified as Ebola. Mayinga N'Seka was one of the nurses who cared for the patients during this outbreak. She contracted the virus while caring for patients and later died from the disease.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The strain of Ebola that Mayinga N'Seka contracted is now known as the Ebola virus strain Mayinga. This strain is one of the most virulent strains of Ebola, with a fatality rate of up to 90%. Mayinga N'Seka's work during the outbreak and her subsequent death brought international attention to the disease and spurred research into its causes and treatment.
