McIntosh County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,333. The county seat is Darien. McIntosh County is included in the Brunswick, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography[edit | edit source]

McIntosh County is located in the southeastern corner of the state, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. It is bounded by Liberty County to the west, Glynn County to the south, and Bryan County to the north.

History[edit | edit source]

McIntosh County was created in 1793 from Liberty County. It was named for the McIntosh clan of Scots who settled in Georgia during the 18th century and were prominent in the Revolutionary War.

As of the 2010 census, there were 14,333 people, 5,971 households, and 4,010 families residing in the county. The population density was 25 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 61.5% White, 35.9% Black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. 2.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The McIntosh County School District operates public schools in the county. The district includes McIntosh County Academy, a high school, and Todd Grant Elementary School.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Major highways in McIntosh County include Interstate 95, U.S. Route 17, and Georgia State Route 57. The county is also served by the McIntosh County Airport, a public-use airport located three miles northeast of the central business district of Darien.
