MelroseWakefield Hospital

MelroseWakefield Hospital is a 174-bed non-profit hospital located in Melrose, Massachusetts. MelroseWakefield Hospital is affiliated with Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford and provides a wide range of patient care services including surgery, cardiology, maternity, orthopedics, endoscopy, and emergency services.

MelroseWakefield Hospital has a history of medical innovation, being the home of the world's first cochlear implant and laser surgery. It was also one of the first hospitals in the country to offer same day surgery. The hospital is recognized for its excellence in stroke care and heart attack treatment, ranking in the top 10% and 15% respectively among hospitals nationwide.

In June 2016, MelroseWakefield's parent company Hallmark Health announced a merger with Wellforce, the operator of Tufts Medical Center in Boston and Lowell General Hospital in Lowell. As a result, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital was renamed to MelroseWakefield Hospital and its parent company became MelroseWakefield Healthcare, a member of Wellforce.

1893–1900: Beginnings[edit | edit source]

MelroseWakefield Hospital traces its roots back to July 28, 1893, when the Melrose Hospital Association was established. The association aimed to establish and maintain a hospital for the treatment and care of needy, sick, and disabled individuals, as well as those who could afford to pay for their treatment. The hospital was initially located on West Foster Street in Melrose.
