Membranous

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Membranous refers to the characteristic of being composed of or containing a membrane. In the field of medicine and biology, it is often used to describe certain structures or conditions that involve membranes.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

In anatomy, the term "membranous" is used to describe structures that are thin, pliable, and often semi-transparent, much like a membrane. For example, the membranous labyrinth is a part of the inner ear that is encased in bone and filled with fluid.

Pathology[edit | edit source]

In pathology, "membranous" can refer to a type of disease or condition that affects the membranes of the body. For instance, membranous nephropathy is a kidney disease that affects the glomerular basement membrane, leading to proteinuria and potentially chronic kidney disease.

Histology[edit | edit source]

In histology, "membranous" can refer to the appearance of certain tissues under a microscope. For example, membranous epithelium is a type of epithelial tissue that appears thin and flat, similar to a membrane.
