Mentsikhang
Traditional Tibetan medical institute in Lhasa, Tibet
Mentsikhang is a renowned traditional Tibetan medical institute located in Lhasa, Tibet. It serves as both a hospital and a training center for practitioners of Tibetan medicine. Established in 1916 by the 13th Dalai Lama, Mentsikhang has played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the ancient medical traditions of Tibet.
History[edit | edit source]
The origins of Mentsikhang can be traced back to the early 20th century when the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, recognized the need to formalize and institutionalize the practice of Tibetan medicine. In 1916, he founded Mentsikhang in Lhasa, which became the central institution for the study and practice of Tibetan medicine and astrology.
During the Cultural Revolution, many traditional practices were suppressed, but Mentsikhang managed to survive and continue its operations. In the years following, it has been instrumental in the revival and modernization of Tibetan medicine.
Functions[edit | edit source]
Mentsikhang serves multiple functions:
- Medical Treatment: It provides healthcare services to the local population using traditional Tibetan medical practices. This includes the use of herbal medicines, acupuncture, and other traditional therapies.
- Education and Training: Mentsikhang is a center for the education and training of Tibetan doctors, known as Amchi. Students undergo rigorous training in the principles of Tibetan medicine, which includes the study of Tibetan pharmacology, diagnostic techniques, and therapeutic methods.
- Research: The institute conducts research into the efficacy of Tibetan medicine and works on integrating traditional practices with modern medical science.
Tibetan Medicine[edit | edit source]
Tibetan medicine, known as Sowa Rigpa, is a holistic system of medicine that has been practiced for over a thousand years. It is based on the principles of balance and harmony within the body and between the body and the environment. The practice involves a combination of herbal medicine, diet, lifestyle advice, and spiritual practices.
Astrology[edit | edit source]
In addition to medicine, Mentsikhang also focuses on Tibetan astrology, which is considered an integral part of Tibetan culture. Astrology is used to guide medical treatments and to provide insights into the timing of important events in a person's life.
Modern Developments[edit | edit source]
In recent years, Mentsikhang has expanded its reach and influence. It collaborates with international organizations to promote Tibetan medicine globally. The institute also engages in the production and distribution of Tibetan herbal medicines, which are now available in various parts of the world.
