From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Merivale is an Australian hospitality company that operates a portfolio of over 70 brands and venues in Sydney, Australia. The company is owned by the Hemmes family, with Justin Hemmes serving as the CEO.

History[edit | edit source]

Merivale was originally a fashion house, founded by the Hemmes family in the 1950s. The company transitioned into hospitality in the 1990s, beginning with the purchase of the Establishment Hotel in Sydney's central business district.

Operations[edit | edit source]

Merivale operates a diverse range of venues, including hotels, restaurants, bars, and event spaces. Some of its most well-known venues include Ivy, a large hospitality complex in Sydney's CBD, and Coogee Pavilion, a multi-level beachfront venue.

The company is known for its innovative approach to hospitality, often transforming underutilised spaces into popular venues. This has included the conversion of a former bottle shop into The Beresford Hotel, and the transformation of an old flour mill into The Newport.

Criticism and Controversy[edit | edit source]

Merivale has faced criticism for its employment practices, with allegations of underpayment and poor working conditions. In 2020, the company settled a class action lawsuit brought by a former employee over these issues.
