Merrilee Fullerton

Merrilee Fullerton is a Canadian politician and physician who has been a significant figure in Ontario's political landscape. Born on May 1, 1960, in Ottawa, Ontario, Fullerton has had a diverse career, transitioning from medicine to politics, where she has made her mark as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.

Before entering politics, Fullerton earned her medical degree from the University of Ottawa and practiced family medicine for nearly three decades. Her medical career provided her with a deep understanding of the healthcare system, which she later brought to her political career.

Fullerton entered the political arena when she was elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Kanata—Carleton in the 2018 Ontario provincial election. Her election was part of a larger wave that saw the Progressive Conservative Party, led by Doug Ford, come to power in Ontario. As an MPP, Fullerton has focused on issues related to healthcare, long-term care, and the well-being of her constituents.

In June 2018, Merrilee Fullerton was appointed as the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, where she was responsible for post-secondary education in Ontario. However, her portfolio was later changed, and she became the Minister of Long-Term Care in June 2019. In this role, Fullerton has faced significant challenges, particularly in managing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on long-term care facilities in Ontario. Her tenure has been marked by efforts to increase the capacity of long-term care homes and improve the quality of care for residents, amidst widespread scrutiny and criticism over the handling of the pandemic within these facilities.

Throughout her political career, Fullerton has been an advocate for improving healthcare and education in Ontario. She has worked on various initiatives aimed at increasing access to healthcare services, enhancing the quality of education, and supporting the economic development of her region.

Merrilee Fullerton's transition from medicine to politics showcases her commitment to public service and her desire to make a positive impact on her community. Her work in both fields reflects her dedication to addressing some of the most pressing issues facing Ontarians today.
