Methuen, Massachusetts is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is located in the northeastern part of the state, along the Merrimack River. As of the 2020 census, the population of Methuen was approximately 53,059.

Methuen was first settled in 1642 and was officially incorporated in 1726. The city was named after Sir Paul Methuen, a member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. During the 19th century, Methuen became a prominent industrial center, particularly known for its textile mills and shoe manufacturing.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Methuen is situated at the confluence of the Merrimack River and the Spicket River. The city covers a total area of 23.1 square miles, of which 22.2 square miles is land and 0.9 square miles is water. The city's terrain is characterized by rolling hills and several small lakes and ponds.

As of the 2020 census, Methuen had a population of 53,059. The city has a diverse population with a mix of different ethnic and racial groups. The median household income in Methuen is higher than the national average, and the city has a relatively low unemployment rate.
