Metro Detroit, also known as Metropolitan Detroit, is a major metropolitan area located in the state of Michigan, United States. The area covers a total land area of 4,858 square miles (12,590 square kilometers) and has a population of approximately 4.3 million people as of 2019.

Metro Detroit was founded in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, a French explorer and adventurer. Cadillac established a fort, known as Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit, which served as a trading post and military outpost.
