Michael Harmer

Michael Harmer is a former deputy chief medical officer for Wales, former chair of the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, and the current chair of the National Clinical Forum for NHS Wales. He was educated at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College in London. Harmer began his career as an anaesthetist at the University Hospital of Wales in 1982 and later became the head of the department of anaesthetics at the University of Wales College of Medicine. In addition to his medical career, Harmer served as a regional assessor for the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths and as vice-chairman of the pain subcommittee for the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiology. In 2007, he was appointed as one of two deputy chief medical officers in the Welsh Department of Health and later became the medical director of NHS Wales. Harmer resigned from his position shortly after. In 2013, he was awarded a CBE for his contributions to healthcare. Harmer was involved in a government scandal, but the details of the scandal are not provided in the source.
