Michel Pollentier
Michel Pollentier (born 13 February 1951 in Diksmuide, Belgium) is a former professional road cyclist from Belgium. His career spanned from 1973 to 1984, during which he achieved notable successes, including winning the 1977 Giro d'Italia and the 1978 Belgian National Road Race Championship. Pollentier was known for his climbing abilities and was one of the prominent figures in the cycling world during the late 1970s.
Career[edit | edit source]
Pollentier turned professional in 1973 and quickly made a name for himself in the cycling world. His major breakthrough came in 1977 when he won the Giro d'Italia, one of cycling's Grand Tours. The following year, he captured the Belgian National Road Race Championship, further establishing his reputation as a top cyclist.
In the 1978 Tour de France, Pollentier was in a strong position to win, having taken the overall lead after the Alpe d'Huez stage. However, his Tour de France campaign came to an abrupt end when he was caught trying to cheat the doping control after the stage. Pollentier attempted to use a device filled with clean urine to pass the doping test, but was discovered by the officials. This incident led to his disqualification from the Tour and a suspension from professional cycling.
Despite this setback, Pollentier returned to racing and continued to compete until his retirement in 1984. Throughout his career, he achieved several other notable victories, including stages in the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España, as well as winning one-day races and smaller stage races.
Post-Racing Career[edit | edit source]
After retiring from professional cycling, Pollentier remained involved in the sport. He has served in various roles, including team management and race organization. His experience and knowledge of cycling have made him a respected figure in the cycling community.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Michel Pollentier's career is remembered for both his impressive victories and the doping scandal that marred his reputation. Despite the controversy, his achievements in the sport of cycling are notable. He is considered one of the best Belgian cyclists of his era, particularly in the discipline of climbing.
