From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Micrantha is a species of citrus that is native to the Philippines. It is a small, thorny tree that produces small, sour fruits. The Micrantha is considered to be one of the primary ancestors of many modern citrus cultivars.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Micrantha is a small tree, typically reaching heights of 3-6 meters. It has a dense, thorny canopy and produces small, sour fruits. The fruits are typically 2-3 cm in diameter and have a thin, rough rind. The pulp is sour and contains numerous seeds.

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

The Micrantha is a member of the Rutaceae family, which includes other citrus species such as the lemon, lime, and orange. It is classified in the genus Citrus, and its full scientific name is Citrus micrantha.

Cultivation and uses[edit | edit source]

The Micrantha is primarily cultivated in the Philippines, where it is used in traditional cooking and medicine. The sour fruits are often used to flavor dishes, and the leaves and bark are used in herbal remedies. Despite its sour taste, the fruit is also eaten raw or used to make a refreshing drink.

Hybridization[edit | edit source]

The Micrantha is believed to be one of the primary ancestors of many modern citrus cultivars. Through natural and artificial hybridization, it has contributed to the development of species such as the pomelo, grapefruit, and mandarin orange.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

The Micrantha is not currently considered to be at risk of extinction. However, like all citrus species, it is susceptible to diseases such as citrus greening disease and citrus canker, which can pose a threat to its survival.
