Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine delivers remarks

Mike DeWine is an American politician and attorney serving as the 70th Governor of Ohio, having assumed office on January 14, 2019. A member of the Republican Party, DeWine's political career spans several decades, during which he has held positions in both the Ohio state government and the federal government.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Mike DeWine was born on January 5, 1947, in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1969 and a Juris Doctor from the Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law in 1972. After completing his education, DeWine worked as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Greene County, Ohio.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

DeWine's political career began in the Ohio State Senate, where he served from 1981 to 1982. He then moved to the national stage, serving as a U.S. Representative for Ohio's 7th congressional district from 1983 to 1991. DeWine's tenure in Congress was marked by his involvement in various legislative initiatives, particularly those related to health care and children's welfare.

In 1991, DeWine was elected as the Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, serving under Governor George Voinovich. This role expanded his influence in Ohio politics and set the stage for his election to the United States Senate in 1994. As a U.S. Senator, DeWine focused on issues such as drug prevention, environmental protection, and national security. He served in the Senate until 2007, when he was succeeded by Democrat Sherrod Brown.

After his tenure in the Senate, DeWine returned to Ohio politics, serving as the Ohio Attorney General from 2011 to 2019. In this role, he was known for his efforts to combat the opioid crisis, improve the state's crime lab services, and advocate for consumer protections.

Governor of Ohio[edit | edit source]

In 2018, DeWine ran for Governor of Ohio, winning the election against Democrat Richard Cordray. As governor, DeWine has focused on issues such as public health, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; economic development; and education reform. His administration has been noted for its efforts to increase funding for mental health services, address water quality issues, and support the growth of Ohio's economy.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Mike DeWine is married to Frances Struewing, and they have eight children together. The DeWine family has been active in Ohio's community and political life for many years.

Legacy and Impact[edit | edit source]

DeWine's long career in public service is characterized by his commitment to children's welfare, public health, and economic development. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular, has been a defining aspect of his tenure as governor, with his early and decisive actions credited with saving lives.
