Milestone Media
Milestone Media is an American comic book company founded in 1993 by a coalition of African-American artists and writers, including Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle. The company was created to address the lack of diversity in the comic book industry and to provide a platform for minority characters and creators.
History[edit | edit source]
Milestone Media was established in 1993 as a response to the underrepresentation of minorities in mainstream comic books. The founders aimed to create a universe where diverse characters could thrive and tell stories that reflected their experiences. The company entered into a publishing agreement with DC Comics, which distributed Milestone's titles but allowed the creators to retain creative control.
Milestone Universe[edit | edit source]
The Milestone Universe, also known as the Dakotaverse, is the fictional universe where Milestone's stories take place. It is named after the fictional city of Dakota City, where many of the characters reside. The universe is known for its diverse cast of characters and socially relevant storylines.
Key Titles and Characters[edit | edit source]
- Static: One of Milestone's most popular characters, Static is a teenager with electromagnetic powers. The character was later adapted into the animated series Static Shock.
- Icon: A superhero with abilities similar to Superman, Icon is an alien who has lived on Earth for centuries. He partners with Rocket, a young woman who becomes his sidekick.
- Hardware: A genius inventor who uses his technological prowess to fight crime and corruption.
- Blood Syndicate: A team of superpowered individuals who band together to protect their community.
Revival[edit | edit source]
In 2020, Milestone Media announced a revival of its characters and stories under the banner "Milestone Returns." This initiative aims to reintroduce the Milestone Universe to a new generation of readers and continue the legacy of diversity and representation in comics.
Impact and Legacy[edit | edit source]
Milestone Media has had a significant impact on the comic book industry by providing a platform for minority creators and characters. The company's commitment to diversity has influenced other publishers to create more inclusive stories and characters.
