Milk of magnesia
Milk of Magnesia is a common over-the-counter medication, known chemically as magnesium hydroxide. It is primarily used as an antacid to neutralize stomach acid and also as a laxative. In some cases, it is prescribed by doctors for other uses.

Milk of Magnesia is a suspension of magnesium hydroxide in water. The solid is insoluble in water, but does react with it to form magnesium hydroxide and a small amount of heat. The suspension can be made more palatable by adding flavors such as mint or lemon.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Milk of Magnesia is primarily used to alleviate symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, gastritis, or acid reflux. It works by neutralizing excess stomach acid. It can also be used as a short-term laxative, due to its ability to draw water into the intestines, promoting bowel movements.
In addition to these common uses, Milk of Magnesia can also be used as a topical application for canker sores and other minor mouth irritations. It has mild antiseptic properties and can help to neutralize the acidic environment that promotes the growth of canker sores.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
While generally safe for use, Milk of Magnesia can cause some side effects, including nausea, bloating, and diarrhea. In rare cases, it can cause an allergic reaction. Long-term use can lead to an imbalance of electrolytes in the body, particularly magnesium and phosphorus, which can have serious health consequences.

Before using Milk of Magnesia, individuals should consult with a healthcare provider if they have kidney disease, are on a magnesium-restricted diet, or are taking other medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also consult with a healthcare provider before use.
