Million
Million is a number in the number system that is represented as 1,000,000. It is commonly used in mathematics, science, finance, and many other fields. The term million comes from the Italian word 'milione', which means 'a great thousand'.
History[edit | edit source]
The concept of a million was not common in the ancient world, and there are not many ancient languages that have a word for this number. The Ancient Greeks had the word 'myriad' for 10,000, but did not have a term for a million. The Romans used the term 'mille' for 1,000, but did not have a term for a million either. The concept of a million was introduced to the western world by the Arabic numerals.
Usage[edit | edit source]
In mathematics, a million is used as a base unit in the decimal system. It is also used in scientific notation to represent large numbers. In finance, a million is often used to represent large amounts of money. In population studies, a million is used to represent large populations.
In language, a million is often used to represent a very large quantity, even if the actual number is not exactly 1,000,000. For example, the phrase 'a million times' is often used to mean 'many times'.
