Mission Viejo is a city located in Orange County, California, United States. It is a suburban city in the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is known for its picturesque landscapes and family-friendly environment. With a population of 96,346 as of the 2010 census, Mission Viejo is one of the largest master-planned communities in the country.

Mission Viejo was incorporated as a city on March 31, 1988. The city's name translates to "Old Mission" in Spanish, referring to the nearby San Juan Capistrano Mission. The area was originally inhabited by the Acjachemen Native American tribe before Spanish missionaries arrived in the late 18th century. The city's development began in the 1960s when the Mission Viejo Company purchased the land and started building homes and infrastructure.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Mission Viejo is located in the southern part of Orange County, California. It is bordered by the cities of Lake Forest to the northwest, Rancho Santa Margarita to the northeast, and Laguna Hills to the southwest. The city has a total area of 19.0 square miles (49.3 km2), of which 18.7 square miles (48.4 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km2) is water.

According to the 2010 census, Mission Viejo had a population of 96,346. The city has a diverse population, with 68.8% being White, 22.8% Asian, 0.4% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Pacific Islander, and 11.2% Hispanic or Latino.

Mission Viejo operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The city is governed by the Mission Viejo City Council, which consists of five members elected by the residents. The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem are selected from among the council members. The day-to-day operations of the city are managed by the City Manager.

Mission Viejo is served by the Saddleback Valley Unified School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools in the area. The city is also home to Saddleback College, a community college that offers a wide range of academic and vocational programs.
