Modulated

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

Modulation is a process that involves varying one or more properties of a periodic waveform, called the carrier signal, with a modulating signal that typically contains information to be transmitted. This is used in telecommunications, signal processing, and many other fields.

Types of Modulation[edit | edit source]

There are several types of modulation, each with its own characteristics and uses. These include:

  • Amplitude Modulation (AM): This is the simplest type of modulation. The amplitude of the carrier signal is varied in proportion to the waveform being sent. This waveform may correspond to sounds to be reproduced by a speaker, or the light intensity of television pixels.
  • Frequency Modulation (FM): In frequency modulation, the frequency of the carrier signal is varied by the instantaneous amplitude of the modulating signal. FM is less susceptible to noise than AM and is commonly used for FM radio broadcasting.
  • Phase Modulation (PM): Phase modulation is a method where the phase of the carrier signal is altered according to the low frequency signal. It is similar to FM modulation and is often used in digital signal processing.
  • Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM): QAM is a modulation scheme which conveys data by changing the amplitude of two carrier waves. These two waves, usually sinusoids, are out of phase with each other by 90 degrees.

Applications of Modulation[edit | edit source]

Modulation is used in various fields and applications, including:

  • Telecommunications: Modulation is a key process in telecommunications, allowing the transmission of signals over long distances.
  • Broadcasting: Both AM and FM modulation techniques are used in radio and television broadcasting.
  • Data Transmission: Modulation is used in data transmission to convert digital signals to analog signals for transmission over analog mediums.
