Mohamed Soltan (born November 16, 1988) is an Egyptian-American human rights advocate known for his activism and his prolonged hunger strike during his imprisonment in Egypt. He is the son of Salah Soltan, a prominent figure associated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Mohamed Soltan was born in Fairfax, Virginia, and grew up in both the United States and Egypt. He attended Ohio State University, where he studied economics.

Activism and Imprisonment[edit | edit source]

Soltan became involved in activism during the Arab Spring and the subsequent political turmoil in Egypt. He was arrested in August 2013 during the violent dispersal of the Rabaa al-Adawiya sit-in, which was a protest against the ousting of Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president.

During his imprisonment, Soltan began a hunger strike that lasted for over 400 days, drawing international attention to his plight and the conditions of political prisoners in Egypt. His health deteriorated significantly during this period, leading to calls for his release from various human rights organizations and U.S. government officials.

Release and Advocacy[edit | edit source]

In May 2015, after nearly two years in prison, Soltan was released and deported to the United States. Following his release, he continued his advocacy work, focusing on issues related to political prisoners and human rights abuses in Egypt. He has worked with several organizations, including the Freedom Initiative, which he founded to advocate for the release of political prisoners in the Middle East.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Soltan's father, Salah Soltan, remains imprisoned in Egypt. Mohamed Soltan has spoken publicly about the impact of his father's imprisonment on his family and continues to campaign for his release.
