Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Mohammad Usman was born on July 15, 1912, in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. He was commissioned into the British Indian Army in 1934 and served with distinction during World War II. Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948[edit | edit source]

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948, Brigadier Usman was given command of the 50th Parachute Brigade, which was deployed in the Jammu and Kashmir region to repel the invading tribal lashkars (militias) supported by Pakistan. His leadership and strategic acumen were instrumental in several key battles during the conflict.

One of his most notable engagements was the defense of Naushera, a strategic town in Jammu and Kashmir. His actions during the Battle of Naushera were critical in preventing the town from falling into the hands of the invaders. For his gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was nicknamed the "Naushera Ka Sher" (Lion of Naushera).
