Monroe County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,973. The county seat is Albia. The county was formed on January 13, 1846 and was named in honor of James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Monroe County is located in the southeastern part of Iowa, with its county seat, Albia, located more or less in the center of the county. The county has a total area of 434 square miles, of which 431 square miles is land and 3.2 square miles is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 7,973 people, 3,255 households, and 2,235 families residing in the county. The population density was 18.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 97.6% White, 0.6% Black or African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 0.7% from two or more races. 1.4% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
