Monterey Park was incorporated on May 29, 1916, making it one of the oldest cities in Los Angeles County. The city's name is derived from the nearby Rancho San Antonio, which was originally owned by the Lugo family. During the 1970s and 1980s, Monterey Park experienced a significant demographic shift, with a large influx of Asian immigrants, particularly of Chinese and Taiwanese descent.
