Moorish Idol

The Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is a marine fish species that is part of the Zanclidae family. It is the only extant member of the Zanclus genus. The species is widely recognized for its distinct and vibrant coloration, which has made it a popular choice in the aquarium trade.

Description[edit | edit source]

The Moorish Idol is known for its disc-like shape, elongated dorsal fin, and its unique pattern of bold, contrasting stripes. The body is primarily yellow and white, with black bands extending vertically across the body. The species can reach up to 23 cm in length.

Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]

The Moorish Idol is found in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. They inhabit coral reefs and lagoons, where they can be found at depths of up to 182 meters.

Behavior and Diet[edit | edit source]

Moorish Idols are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They are omnivorous, feeding on a diet of sponges, tunicates, and other small invertebrates.

In the Aquarium Trade[edit | edit source]

Despite their popularity, Moorish Idols are known to be difficult to keep in captivity due to their specific dietary and environmental needs. They require large tanks with plenty of hiding spots and a varied diet of live foods.

Conservation Status[edit | edit source]

The Moorish Idol is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to its wide distribution and large population. However, the species is threatened by habitat loss due to coral bleaching and other human activities.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

The Moorish Idol is named after the Moors of Africa, who believed the fish to be a bringer of happiness. It has also gained popularity in popular culture, most notably as the character Gill in the animated film Finding Nemo.
