Morteza Mehrzad
Morteza Mehrzad Selakjani (Persian: مرتضی مهرزاد سلکجانی) is an Iranian Paralympic volleyball player known for being the tallest man in Iran and the second tallest man in the world, standing at 246 cm (8 ft 1 in). Born on September 17, 1987, in Chalus, Iran, Mehrzad's extraordinary height is due to a condition known as acromegaly, which results from excess growth hormone, and was exacerbated by an injury during his youth that caused his right leg to stop growing.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Morteza Mehrzad had a normal childhood until the age of 16, when he fell off his bike, resulting in a pelvis injury that led to his right leg ceasing its growth. This incident, combined with his condition of acromegaly, contributed to his unusual height. Due to his height and the difficulties it brought in his daily life, Mehrzad led a reclusive life for many years.
Career[edit | edit source]
Mehrzad was discovered by the coach of the Iranian national sitting volleyball team, who saw potential in him due to his height and reach. He was introduced to sitting volleyball, a variant of volleyball for athletes with disabilities, and quickly became a key player for the national team. Mehrzad made his Paralympic debut at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, where he played a crucial role in helping Iran win the gold medal in men's sitting volleyball. His performance was notable for his powerful spikes and blocks, making him a standout player in the tournament.
Mehrzad's participation in the Paralympics not only showcased his athletic abilities but also brought attention to the sport of sitting volleyball and the capabilities of athletes with disabilities. He continued to represent Iran in international competitions, contributing to the team's success and promoting the sport.
