Moshulu[edit | edit source]

Moshulu is a four-masted steel barque, currently docked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, serving as a restaurant ship. It is considered one of the largest remaining original windjammers in the world.

History[edit | edit source]

Moshulu was built in 1904 by William Hamilton and Company in Port Glasgow, Scotland. The ship was originally named Kurt after Dr. Kurt Siemers, a director of the shipping company Hamburg Amerikanische Packetfahrt Actien Gesellschaft (HAPAG).

In 1917, the ship was seized by the United States government and renamed Moshulu, which means "Fearless" in the language of the Seneca tribe.

Restaurant Ship[edit | edit source]

In 1975, Moshulu was purchased by the Philadelphia Maritime Museum and was converted into a restaurant. The ship is now permanently moored at Penn's Landing on the Delaware River, where it serves as a unique dining experience.

In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]

Moshulu has made several appearances in popular culture. It was featured in the 1939 film The Sea Hawk and the 1973 film The Godfather Part II.
