Mouth and foot painting
Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA) is an international organization that exclusively represents artists who, due to disability or illness, create art with their mouths or feet. Established in 1956 by a group of European artists, the MFPA aims to support its members financially and socially, providing a platform for them to showcase and sell their artwork. The organization operates on a unique self-help system, where the sales of original artworks, reproductions, and related products contribute to the livelihood of its members.
History[edit | edit source]
The MFPA was founded by Arnulf Erich Stegmann, a German artist who lost the use of his hands due to polio. Stegmann's vision was to create a cooperative that would empower artists like himself to live independently through their art. Since its inception, the MFPA has grown to include members from over 70 countries, demonstrating the universal appeal and inclusivity of art.
Membership[edit | edit source]
Membership in the MFPA is divided into different categories: Associate Members, Full Members, and Student Members. Associate Members are artists who have recently joined the organization and are in the early stages of their career. Full Members are established artists who have demonstrated consistent high-quality work. Student Members are individuals who are in the process of learning and developing their artistic skills. The transition from one category to another is based on the artist's development, as assessed by the MFPA.
Techniques and Media[edit | edit source]
Artists within the MFPA employ a variety of techniques and media to create their artwork. These include traditional painting, drawing, digital art, and more. The choice of medium often depends on the individual artist's preference, their physical capabilities, and the desired outcome of their work. Regardless of the medium, the emphasis is always on creativity, expression, and the unique perspective that comes from overcoming significant physical challenges.
Exhibitions and Recognition[edit | edit source]
The MFPA organizes exhibitions and participates in art fairs worldwide to promote the work of its members. These events not only serve as a platform for selling artwork but also help to raise awareness about the abilities and talents of people with disabilities. Many MFPA artists have received national and international recognition for their work, further challenging societal perceptions of disability.
Impact and Legacy[edit | edit source]
The MFPA has had a profound impact on the lives of its members, providing not just financial support but also a sense of community and purpose. By highlighting the extraordinary achievements of its artists, the organization continues to inspire and challenge the broader society's views on art and disability.
