Mowi
Mowi ASA is one of the world's leading seafood companies, and the world’s largest producer of Atlantic salmon. The company, formerly known as Marine Harvest, was rebranded as Mowi in 2019. Mowi's operations cover the entire value chain of salmon farming, from feed production to harvesting, processing, and sales. The company's headquarters are located in Bergen, Norway, and it operates in several countries around the globe.
History[edit | edit source]
Mowi's origins can be traced back to the early 1960s, with the pioneering work in salmon farming by Norwegian aquaculture scientists. The company was officially established in 1964, under the name Mowi, a name it would return to many years later. Over the decades, Mowi expanded its operations internationally and underwent several mergers and acquisitions, significantly growing its production capacity and market reach. In 2006, the company merged with Fjord Seafood, Pan Fish, and Marine Harvest, adopting the Marine Harvest name. In 2019, in a move to consolidate its brand and heritage, the company changed its name back to Mowi.
Operations[edit | edit source]
Mowi's operations are diverse and span the entire value chain of salmon farming. This includes:
- Feed Production: Mowi produces feed specifically tailored for the dietary needs of salmon at various stages of their lifecycle.
- Farming: The company operates salmon farms in countries with optimal conditions for salmon aquaculture, including Norway, Scotland, Canada, Chile, Ireland, and the Faroe Islands.
- Processing and Sales: Mowi processes salmon into a variety of products, including fresh, frozen, and smoked salmon. These products are then sold in markets around the world, catering to both retail and foodservice sectors.
Sustainability[edit | edit source]
Sustainability is a core component of Mowi's operations. The company is committed to responsible farming practices and aims to minimize its environmental impact. This includes efforts to reduce emissions, improve fish health and welfare, and ensure the sustainable use of feed resources. Mowi is also involved in various initiatives and partnerships aimed at promoting sustainability within the aquaculture industry.
Challenges[edit | edit source]
Despite its success, Mowi, like the rest of the aquaculture industry, faces several challenges. These include environmental concerns, such as the impact of fish farming on local ecosystems and the challenge of managing fish waste and diseases. The company also faces regulatory challenges, as governments and international bodies implement stricter regulations on aquaculture practices.
