Munzee
Munzee is a scavenger hunt game where players use their smartphones to find and capture QR codes, known as "munzees," that are hidden in various locations. The game combines elements of geocaching and augmented reality to create an interactive and engaging experience.
History[edit | edit source]
Munzee was created in 2011 by a group of friends who wanted to develop a modern alternative to geocaching. The name "Munzee" is derived from the German word "Münze," meaning "coin," reflecting the game's treasure-hunting roots.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Players start by downloading the Munzee app on their iOS or Android devices. They can then search for munzees in their vicinity using the app's map feature. When a player finds a munzee, they scan the QR code with their smartphone to capture it. Each capture earns the player points, which contribute to their overall score and ranking on the game's leaderboards.
Types of Munzees[edit | edit source]
There are several types of munzees, each with unique characteristics and point values:
- Virtual Munzees: These do not have a physical QR code and can be captured within a certain radius.
- Physical Munzees: These are stickers or tags with QR codes that players must physically find and scan.
- Mystery Munzees: These provide a random number of points when captured.
- Special Munzees: These are limited-time or event-specific munzees that offer unique rewards.
Deployment[edit | edit source]
Players can also deploy their own munzees for others to find. To deploy a munzee, a player must place a QR code in a location and register it in the app. Deployed munzees earn points for the player each time they are captured by others.
Events[edit | edit source]
Munzee hosts various events throughout the year, including special challenges, themed hunts, and community gatherings. These events often feature exclusive munzees and offer additional opportunities for players to earn points and interact with other members of the Munzee community.
Community[edit | edit source]
The Munzee community is active and global, with players from around the world participating in the game. The game encourages social interaction through its clan system, where players can join groups to complete challenges and earn rewards together.
