Murfreesboro is a city located in Rutherford County, Tennessee, United States. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area and serves as the county seat of Rutherford County. Murfreesboro is known for its rich history, vibrant community, and as the home of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU).

Murfreesboro was originally named "Cannonsburgh" in honor of Newton Cannon, a young politician in the area. However, the name was changed to Murfreesboro in 1811 to honor Hardy Murfree, a Revolutionary War hero. The city was officially incorporated in 1817.
During the American Civil War, Murfreesboro was the site of the Battle of Stones River, a significant battle that took place from December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863. The battle was a strategic victory for the Union Army and is commemorated at the Stones River National Battlefield.

Murfreesboro is located in the geographic center of Tennessee, approximately 34 miles southeast of Nashville. The city covers a total area of 63.2 square miles, of which 62.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.

As of the 2020 census, Murfreesboro had a population of 152,769, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Tennessee. The city has a diverse population with a mix of different cultures and ethnicities.

Murfreesboro is home to Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), the largest undergraduate university in the state of Tennessee. MTSU offers a wide range of programs and is known for its aerospace, music, and business programs.
