Murong Chui (326–396), courtesy name Daoming, was a prominent general and the founder of the Later Yan dynasty during the period of the Sixteen Kingdoms in China. He was a member of the Murong clan of the Xianbei people.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Murong Chui was born in 326 into the influential Murong clan, which played a significant role in the history of the Xianbei people. His father, Murong Huang, was the founder of the Former Yan dynasty. Murong Chui was known for his military prowess and strategic acumen from a young age.

Military Career[edit | edit source]

Murong Chui served as a general under his brother, Murong Jun, who succeeded their father as the ruler of the Former Yan. He played a crucial role in the expansion and consolidation of the Former Yan territory. However, internal strife and power struggles within the Murong clan led to his temporary downfall.

Service under Former Qin[edit | edit source]

After a fallout with his nephew, Murong Wei, Murong Chui defected to the Former Qin dynasty, where he served under the ruler Fu Jian. His military expertise was instrumental in several campaigns, including the significant Battle of Fei River in 383, where the Former Qin forces suffered a devastating defeat.

Founding of Later Yan[edit | edit source]

In 384, taking advantage of the weakened state of the Former Qin after the Battle of Fei River, Murong Chui declared independence and established the Later Yan dynasty. He proclaimed himself emperor and worked to consolidate his rule over northern China. His reign was marked by efforts to stabilize the region and rebuild the economy.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Murong Chui died in 396 and was succeeded by his son, Murong Bao. His legacy is remembered for his military skills and his role in the establishment of the Later Yan dynasty, which continued to play a significant role in the history of the Sixteen Kingdoms period.
