Musakhan is a traditional Palestinian dish, typically consisting of roasted chicken baked with onions, sumac, allspice, saffron, and fried pine nuts atop one or more taboons. It is often considered the national dish of Palestine.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "Musakhan" is an Arabic word which literally translates to "something that is heated". It is named so because the dish is typically served hot.

Ingredients and Preparation[edit | edit source]

Musakhan is primarily made up of roasted chicken, onions, sumac, allspice, saffron, and fried pine nuts. The chicken is first roasted and then baked with the onions, sumac, allspice, and saffron. The dish is then topped with fried pine nuts. The entire dish is traditionally served atop one or more pieces of taboons, a type of flatbread that is common in Middle Eastern cuisine.

Musakhan is often considered the national dish of Palestine. It is a popular dish in Palestinian culture and is often prepared in large quantities during the olive harvest season as a means to show appreciation to neighbors and friends who have helped with the harvest. It is also a common dish at large gatherings and celebrations.
