Corrugator supercilii muscle
(Redirected from Musculus corrugator supercilii)
Corrugator Supercilii Muscle
The Corrugator Supercilii is a small, narrow, pyramidal muscle located at the medial end of the eyebrow, beneath the Frontalis and Orbicularis Oculi muscles. It is involved in the movements of the eyebrow, playing a significant role in the expression of concern, frowning, and the deepening of the vertical furrows above the nose, often referred to as "frown lines."
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The Corrugator Supercilii originates from the medial end of the superciliary arch, specifically from the frontal bone, near the nasal bridge. It inserts into the skin above the middle of the eyebrow, blending with the fibers of the Frontalis and Orbicularis Oculi muscles. This muscle is innervated by the temporal branch of the Facial Nerve (CN VII), which controls facial expression. Its blood supply comes from the supraorbital and supratrochlear arteries, branches of the ophthalmic artery.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the Corrugator Supercilii is to draw the eyebrow downward and medially, causing the skin of the forehead to move into a vertical wrinkle. This action is associated with frowning and the expression of worry, anger, or concentration. By pulling the eyebrows together, it also helps to protect the eyes from the glare of bright light.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
- Hyperactivity
Hyperactivity of the Corrugator Supercilii muscle can contribute to the development of deep vertical furrows between the eyebrows, often considered a cosmetic concern. This condition can be treated with Botulinum Toxin injections, which temporarily paralyze the muscle, smoothing out the skin above.
- Surgical Considerations
In certain facial surgeries, particularly those involving the eyebrows or forehead, knowledge of the Corrugator Supercilii's location and function is crucial to avoid unintended damage to the muscle, which could result in altered facial expressions or asymmetry.
