Musgrave Park Hospital bombing
Musgrave Park Hospital bombing
The Musgrave Park Hospital bombing was a significant event during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It occurred on 2 November 1991 at the Musgrave Park Hospital in Belfast, resulting in the deaths of two British soldiers and injuries to several others. The attack was carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA).
Background[edit | edit source]
Musgrave Park Hospital is a large teaching hospital located in the Balmoral area of Belfast. During The Troubles, it was used by the British Army to treat soldiers injured in the conflict. The hospital had a dedicated military wing, which made it a target for the IRA.
The Bombing[edit | edit source]
On the day of the bombing, the IRA planted a bomb in the hospital's military wing. The device exploded at approximately 4:35 PM, causing extensive damage to the building. The explosion killed two British soldiers, Lance Corporal Michael Ball and Private Peter Bullock, and injured several others, including hospital staff and patients.
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
The bombing was widely condemned by both the British and Irish governments, as well as by various political and community leaders in Northern Ireland. The attack highlighted the vulnerability of military personnel even in medical facilities and led to increased security measures at hospitals used by the British Army.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The Musgrave Park Hospital bombing had a significant impact on public opinion and the course of The Troubles. It underscored the lengths to which the IRA was willing to go to target British military personnel and brought renewed attention to the ongoing conflict in Northern Ireland.
