Muskegon
Muskegon is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Muskegon County. The city is located at the southwest corner of Muskegon Township, but is administratively autonomous.

Muskegon was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe, Ottawa, and Potawatomi peoples. The name "Muskegon" is derived from the Ottawa word "Masquigon," meaning "marshy river or swamp." The area was first settled by Euro-Americans in 1837.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Muskegon is situated along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Muskegon River. The city covers a total area of 18.12 square miles, of which 14.21 square miles is land and 3.91 square miles is water.
Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the 2020 census, the population of Muskegon was 38,318. The city has a diverse population with a mix of different ethnic and racial groups.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Muskegon's economy has historically been based on the lumber industry, but it has diversified over the years. Today, the city has a mix of manufacturing, healthcare, and tourism sectors. The Port of Muskegon is a significant contributor to the local economy.

Muskegon is served by the Muskegon Public Schools district. Higher education institutions in the area include Muskegon Community College and a branch of Baker College.

The city is home to several healthcare facilities, including Mercy Health Muskegon and Hackley Hospital.

Muskegon offers a variety of cultural and recreational activities. The Muskegon Museum of Art and the Frauenthal Center for the Performing Arts are notable cultural institutions. The city also hosts the annual Muskegon Summer Celebration, a popular festival featuring music, food, and fireworks.

Muskegon is served by the Muskegon County Airport and has access to major highways such as U.S. Route 31 and Interstate 96. Public transportation is provided by the Muskegon Area Transit System.
