Naja haje
Naja haje is a species of venomous snake in the family Elapidae, commonly known as the Egyptian cobra. It is native to regions in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and is one of the largest cobra species.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Naja haje can reach lengths of up to 3 meters, making it one of the largest cobra species. Its coloration varies from brown to black, with a characteristic tear-drop mark under the eye. The snake's hood, which it expands when threatened, is a key identifying feature.
Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]
The Naja haje is found across a wide range of habitats, including savannas, grasslands, and desert edges. Its distribution spans from the Arabian Peninsula to regions across Africa, including Egypt, Ethiopia, and the Congo.
Behavior and Diet[edit | edit source]
The Naja haje is primarily nocturnal, hunting at night for a diet that includes rodents, birds, and other small animals. It is known for its aggressive behavior when threatened, raising its body off the ground and expanding its hood.
Venom[edit | edit source]
The venom of the Naja haje is highly toxic, containing both neurotoxins and cytotoxins. It is capable of causing rapid paralysis and death in its victims. Despite this, the snake plays a crucial role in its ecosystem, controlling populations of rodents and other pests.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The Naja haje is currently listed as a species of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, it faces threats from habitat loss and persecution due to fear of its venom.
Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]
The Naja haje has a significant presence in Egyptian mythology and culture, often depicted in ancient Egyptian art. It is also the snake likely used in the ancient practice of snake charming.
