Nancy McFarlane is an American politician who served as the Mayor of Raleigh, North Carolina. She was elected in 2011 and served until 2019. McFarlane, an independent, was known for her focus on growth management, public transportation improvements, and environmental sustainability during her tenure. Before becoming mayor, she was a member of the Raleigh City Council, representing District A.

Nancy McFarlane was born in Washington, D.C. and later moved to Raleigh, where she pursued her higher education. She graduated from the Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Pharmacy.

Before entering politics, McFarlane had a successful career in the pharmaceutical sector. She co-founded MedPro Rx, an accredited specialty infusion pharmacy that provides infusion medications and services to clients with chronic illnesses.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

McFarlane's political career began on the Raleigh City Council, where she served for four years. Her work on the council was marked by her advocacy for sustainable growth and development policies. In 2011, she ran for mayor of Raleigh and won, becoming the city's second female mayor. McFarlane was re-elected in 2013 and 2015, serving a total of four terms.

As mayor, McFarlane focused on a variety of issues, including expanding the city's public transportation system, fostering economic development, and enhancing Raleigh's parks and recreational facilities. She was also instrumental in the development of the Dix Park, a large public park on the site of the former Dorothea Dix Hospital.
