History

Nassau was founded in the mid-17th century by British settlers who called it Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England. The town was burned to the ground by the Spanish in 1684, and it was rebuilt and renamed Nassau in 1695 in honor of William III of England, who was from the Dutch House of Nassau.
