National Football Conference
Template:Infobox NFL conference
The National Football Conference (NFC) is one of the two conferences of the National Football League (NFL), the highest professional level of American football in the United States. The NFC was established in 1970 as part of the merger between the National Football League and the American Football League (AFL), which resulted in the creation of the modern NFL.
History[edit | edit source]
The NFC was formed when the NFL and AFL merged in 1970. At that time, the NFL was reorganized into two conferences: the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFC initially consisted of 13 teams from the pre-merger NFL, while the AFC was composed of 10 AFL teams and three NFL teams.
The NFC has undergone several expansions and realignments since its inception. Notably, the addition of the Seattle Seahawks in 1976 and the Carolina Panthers in 1995 expanded the conference. The most recent realignment occurred in 2002, when the NFL expanded to 32 teams and the NFC was divided into four divisions: NFC East, NFC North, NFC South, and NFC West.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The NFC is composed of 16 teams, divided into four divisions:
- NFC East: Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders
- NFC North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings
- NFC South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- NFC West: Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks
Each team plays 17 regular-season games, with the schedule including games against division rivals, teams from another division within the NFC, and teams from the AFC.
Championships[edit | edit source]
The NFC champion is determined through the NFC playoffs, a single-elimination tournament held at the end of the regular season. The winner of the NFC Championship Game receives the George Halas Trophy and advances to the Super Bowl to face the champion of the AFC.
The Dallas Cowboys hold the record for the most NFC championships, having won the title eight times. The most recent NFC champion is the Los Angeles Rams, who won the conference in the 2021 season.
Rivalries[edit | edit source]
The NFC is home to some of the most storied rivalries in the NFL, including:
- Dallas Cowboys vs. Washington Commanders
- Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears
- San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams
These rivalries are characterized by their long histories and competitive matchups, often with significant playoff implications.
