National Health Action Party

From WikiMD.com Medical Encyclopedia

The National Health Action Party (NHAP) is a political party in the United Kingdom, founded in 2012. The party was established by a group of doctors, health professionals, and ordinary citizens in response to concerns about the National Health Service (NHS) and its future under government policies.

History[edit | edit source]

The National Health Action Party was officially launched on 14 November 2012. It was co-founded by Dr. Clive Peedell, a consultant clinical oncologist, and Dr. Richard Taylor, a former independent Member of Parliament for Wyre Forest. The party was formed in reaction to the Health and Social Care Act 2012, which they believed would lead to the privatisation of the NHS.

Aims and Objectives[edit | edit source]

The primary aim of the National Health Action Party is to protect and improve the NHS. The party advocates for:

  • Reversing privatisation and restoring the NHS as a publicly funded, publicly provided service.
  • Increasing funding for the NHS to meet the needs of the population.
  • Ensuring that healthcare decisions are made based on clinical need rather than financial considerations.
  • Promoting public health initiatives and addressing social determinants of health.

Political Activity[edit | edit source]

The NHAP has contested several elections since its inception. In the 2015 United Kingdom general election, the party fielded candidates in various constituencies, although it did not win any seats. The party has also participated in local elections and by-elections, focusing on issues related to healthcare and public services.

Campaigns and Advocacy[edit | edit source]

The NHAP is active in campaigning against policies that they believe undermine the NHS. They have been vocal critics of government austerity measures and cuts to public services. The party also engages in public education efforts to raise awareness about the impact of policy changes on healthcare.
