National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles
National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles
The National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (Natsal) is a series of surveys conducted in the United Kingdom to gather data on the sexual behavior, attitudes, and lifestyles of the British population. These surveys are among the largest and most comprehensive studies of sexual behavior in the world.
History[edit | edit source]
The first Natsal survey was conducted in 1990, with subsequent surveys taking place in 2000 and 2010. The surveys are carried out by a team of researchers from various institutions, including University College London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Methodology[edit | edit source]
Natsal surveys use a combination of face-to-face interviews and self-completed questionnaires to collect data. The surveys are designed to be representative of the British population, and they cover a wide range of topics related to sexual health and behavior.
Key Findings[edit | edit source]
The surveys have provided valuable insights into the sexual behavior of the British population, including information on:
- Sexual activity: Patterns and frequency of sexual activity among different age groups.
- Contraception: Use of contraceptive methods and changes over time.
- Sexual health: Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and access to sexual health services.
- Attitudes: Public attitudes towards various aspects of sexual behavior and relationships.
Impact[edit | edit source]
The findings from the Natsal surveys have been used to inform public health policy and sexual health education in the UK. They have also contributed to the understanding of sexual behavior and health at an international level.
